Options-Based Approach

Strengthen your standardized response protocol and playbooks with a recognized approach for addressing violent emergencies through ALICE聽Training for schools:

Become aware of a threat. A speedy response is critical to survival. Quickly recognizing and accepting signs of danger allows one to make the best survival decision for the situation.
ALICE鈥檚 enhanced Lockdown strategy buys time and fortifies safety when evacuation isn鈥檛 possible, keeping individuals secure until help arrives.
Use real-time information about the armed assailant to help others make informed decisions during an emergency. Identifying the exact location of the threat using a PA system, 911 call, or another channel can give others an opportunity to escape.
As a last resort, Counter involves creating noise, movement, and distraction to disrupt the intruder鈥檚 focus. It is not synonymous with fighting.
If safe to do so, evacuate to distance yourself from the threat, using any available exits and moving to designated rally points, which should be practiced during ALICE drills.

Trauma Informed Active Shooter Training

Trauma-Informed

Training is trauma-informed, guided by the four R鈥檚: Realize the effects of trauma, Recognize the signs of trauma, Respond to students using trauma-informed practices, and Resist re-traumatization during drills.

A common question educators ask is: why is it important to utilize a trauma-informed approach when implementing the ALICE protocol? Trauma-informed delivery helps ensure preparedness while minimizing anxiety and supporting student emotional well-being during safety training.

Each component of ALICE considers the emotional impact of ALICE Active Shooter Response Training and emergency preparedness drills.

Leaders and staff must understand the impact of trauma and how it can influence behavior, decision-making, communication, and overall well-being. This includes recognizing how past experiences shape responses to stress and crisis.

Being trauma-informed means identifying signs that someone may be struggling鈥攕uch as withdrawal, heightened aggression, fatigue, or disengagement鈥攁nd understanding these may be linked to past trauma rather than willful misconduct.

Trauma-informed response strategies involve using respectful language, practicing situational awareness, and implementing policies that prioritize emotional safety alongside physical security. Every interaction is an opportunity to reinforce trust and support.

Safety drills and training exercises should be conducted in ways that avoid triggering individuals who have experienced trauma. ALICE Training庐 emphasizes thoughtful communication, age- and ability-appropriate instruction, and the importance of debriefing and support after training events.
