Teachers are supported with lesson plans and visual aids that simplify introducing critical safety concepts in ways students can understand and retain as part of ALICE Training for schools.
Trauma-Informed
Training is trauma-informed, guided by the four R鈥檚: Realize the effects of trauma, Recognize the signs of trauma, Respond to students using trauma-informed practices, and Resist re-traumatization during drills.
A common question educators ask is: why is it important to utilize a trauma-informed approach when implementing the ALICE protocol? Trauma-informed delivery helps ensure preparedness while minimizing anxiety and supporting student emotional well-being during safety training.
Each component of ALICE considers the emotional impact of ALICE Active Shooter Response Training and emergency preparedness drills.
Leaders and staff must understand the impact of trauma and how it can influence behavior, decision-making, communication, and overall well-being. This includes recognizing how past experiences shape responses to stress and crisis.
Being trauma-informed means identifying signs that someone may be struggling鈥攕uch as withdrawal, heightened aggression, fatigue, or disengagement鈥攁nd understanding these may be linked to past trauma rather than willful misconduct.
Trauma-informed response strategies involve using respectful language, practicing situational awareness, and implementing policies that prioritize emotional safety alongside physical security. Every interaction is an opportunity to reinforce trust and support.
Safety drills and training exercises should be conducted in ways that avoid triggering individuals who have experienced trauma. ALICE Training庐 emphasizes thoughtful communication, age- and ability-appropriate instruction, and the importance of debriefing and support after training events.
